president instead. as a republican against president obama in this past election election. and it's all on tape. this is se lashs almost to the point. we're talking about general petraeus. long-time republican, possible contender, the man who just resigned from running the cia in a sex scandal we still don't understand. here he is on tape talking about how he will have the fox news chairman run his campaign and the owner of fox news will bankroll his campaign and he raises the issue of his wife. there's a certain level of interest in this new tape because of who is on it. beyond that, there's the media factor. here's the fox news channel trying to recruit a presidential candidate for the republican party. the fox news chairman telling bob woodward once he was reporting on this, "i thought the republican field in the primaries needed to be shaken up and petraeus might be a good candidate." he said that on the record. after being caught doing it on tape. which means the fox news channel seriously is not like anything news. they officially are just a media arm of the republican party. they

president obama, you will know it by his signature. the president has an official twitter account from which all sorts of on message things get tweeted. but the white house says you know when a tweet has been written by the president himself because in that case the tweet gets a little initial signature. a "bo" in lower case. barack obama, as in i the president wrote this tweet. if it was a dog, it would be the paw print. the president was writing his own tweet this is afternoon. the string of twitter messages about the budget negotiations in washington. the white house announcing in advance today that the president himself would be answering people's questions about the negotiations in washington. he would be answering them directly on twit ter starting a 2:00 p.m. eastern. it is kind of awesome that regular people can ask direct questions from the leader of the free world. it's like a town hall but you don't have to go to new hampshire in the winter to do it. but doing this shows the unique risks of totally unmediated communication methods for high profile people. like there was this excha

high-stakes negotiations that he's having with president obama right now. they didn't like everything john boehner is proposing, but as you can see in the headline there, they thought it was worth two cheers, two cheers for john boehner. they proclaimed it as good news that john boehner was announcing that he has pulled out of the fiscal cliff talks with president obama and is moving toward the approach that freedomworks has been urging. good news. two cheers for john boehner and his plan b. they posted that yesterday morning. we know that because our friend james carter was able to access the old web archived version of it because the current version of it doesn't look like that anymore. they had to change it. they had to change it because apparently that isn't really the freedomworks position on john boehner. at least they don't think that's their position -- actually, you know, we're not quite sure. they put up an update on their earlier announcement saying that despite their earlier support, after further review freedomworks had decided to oppose john boehner's plan b thing. they

state because, well, obviously president obama is a secret muslim, or so says the bill's republican author in michigan. all of this stuff is being passed and signed or debated in michigan this week, after state republicans there passed their monumental legislation stripping union rights in the state. with no warning and no debate after an election in which they did not say that was what they were going to do. that surprise attack legislation passed in such a breathless hurry there are now lawsuits in the state whether the bills were passed illegally, in contradiction of the state's sunshine laws. they're also trying to figure out whether the new union-stripping laws in michigan will apply to workers who work for the state government, or if they only killed the unions in the private sector. but the reason that governor snyder has been able to do all of this in such a hurry, the reason he was able to make the 180 he pulled on stripping union rights, for example, the reason he is able to purchase saul the anti-abortion and the anti-sharia law legislation is because he can, right? michi

the democratic party and became the 60th vote on obama care. so that worked out well for demint. but demint does rather this being in the minority thing so much that he wants to seven out the rest of his term in the minority. when you're a senator and you even begin talking to another employer about leaving the senate, you have to file this paper with the senate office of public records. they do that so before a big vote on, say, an energy bill that will make oil companies really rich, you can't go to a big oil company and say, hey, don't you think i'd make a good executive vice president who doesn't do anything but makes a ton of money for not doing it? but makes way less money than you'll make if this bill i'm going to be voting on passes? we want to know that kind of thing if it's happening. so you have to file this paper and demint filed his paper only yesterday. according to him, these negotiations began and ended in 24 hours. that is very decisive for leaving the u.s. senate. and if it is true then it's really looking like the heritage foundation and jim demint saw an opportuni

first day in the majority. but they did figure out how to fake symbolically repeal obama care 33 separate times. it didn't mean anything, but when there were things that didn't mean anything that were just symbolic, ultimately they figured out that they could get some of that stuff done. but when things really did matter, like in the debt ceiling standoff, when the republicans decided to block something they happily voted for dozens of times under republican presidents, they did end up having to vote to raise the debt ceiling, but not before they pushed the fight so far and so late that the nation's bond rating got downgraded explicitly because of the breakdown in basic governing capacity in washington. and the length and the ferocity and the pointlessness of that fight -- this to job growth for the term of that fight. not good. the "john boehner is bad at his job" hypothesis is by now a pretty well-founded hypothesis. that was the case even before mr. boehner's republican caucus just imploded last night and gave up and went home and asked the democrats to instead see if there is
